A graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Music Education, she spent many years as a public school music teacher and private vocal coach. Her competitive spirit and drive for success were evident when she won the title of Miss Texas in 1994 and placed in the Top 10 at the 1995 Miss America pageant.
